The 2022 Indian Premier League ( ইন্ডিয়ান প্রিমিয়ার লিগ ২০২২),also known as IPL 15 (আইপিএল ১৫) or, for sponsorship reasons, TataIPL 2022 (আইপিএল ২০২২), is scheduled to be the fifteenth season ofthe Indian Premier League (IPL), a professional Twenty20 cricketleague established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) in 2007. The season will see the expansion of the league,with the addition of two new franchises. This will make it thesecond season to have ten teams, after the 2011 tournament. ChennaiSuper Kings are the defending champions, having won their fourthtitle during the previous season. Although earlier reportssuggested the addition of two more teams in the previous season,the BCCI at their 89th AGM announced that the expansion of theleague would occur only in 2022. In August 2021, the BCCI confirmedthat two new franchises would join the league starting from the2022 season. It was also announced that the franchises would bebased in two of the six cities shortlisted by the BCCI; Ahmedabad,Cuttack, Dharamshala, Guwahati, Indore, and Lucknow. In closedbidding held on 25 October 2021, RPSG Group and CVC Capital wonbids for the two teams. RPSG paid ₹7,090 crores (US$940 million)for Lucknow, whereas CVC won Ahmedabad for ₹5,625 crores (US$750million). The Lucknow team was named Lucknow Super Giants on 24January 2022, whereas the Ahmedabad team was named Gujarat Titanson 9 February 2022. Vivo pulled out as the title sponsor of thetournament on 11 January 2022. Vivo, having previously pulled outas sponsors in 2020, had signed a contract as title sponsors till2023. The Tata Group was named as the title sponsor for theremainder of Vivo's contract.
